How to Remove the Protective Plastic Film from Your Goalkeeper Gloves

A quick guide to getting your gloves match-ready
You've just unboxed a fresh pair of goalkeeper gloves — exciting stuff. But before you do anything else, try them on for fit first. Once you're happy with the sizing, there's one final step before they're match-ready: removing the protective plastic film from the latex palm.
It sounds simple, but doing it wrong can damage the latex before you've even made your first save. Here's how to do it properly.
Why Is There a Film on My Gloves?
The fact that your gloves arrived with a protective film is actually a mark of quality. It means you've purchased a pair with the highest grade contact latex palms — the same latex used at the top level of the game.
This latex is so exceptionally tacky that without protection, it would attract dust, fibres, and other material during manufacturing, compromising the grip before the gloves even reach you. The film keeps the palm surface pristine and the tackiness fully intact until the moment you're ready to play.
Step-by-Step: How to Remove the Film
1. Try them on first
Before removing anything, put the gloves on and check the fit. Once the film is off and the latex is activated, you'll want to be confident you've got the right size.
2. Find the opening
Look for the small opening we have created in the crease of the thumb — this is your starting point for peeling back the film.
3. Peel slowly and evenly
Using your fingernail or the tip of a finger, gently lift the edge and peel the film back slowly. Work across the palm in one smooth motion rather than pulling sharply — this reduces the risk of tearing the latex underneath.
4. Don't rush it
If the film feels resistant, don't force it. Lightly dampen the palm with water first — this can help loosen the adhesion without harming the latex.
5. Clear the seams
Check the finger seams carefully — small remnants of film can sometimes get caught in the stitching. If you spot any, use a pair of tweezers to remove them very carefully, taking care not to pull at the latex or stitching.
6. Give the latex a light wash
Once the film is fully removed, rinse the palm under lukewarm water and gently rub the latex to activate the grip. Pat dry with a soft cloth — never wring or twist.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Pulling too hard — sharp tugs can tear the latex, especially on softer, high-tack palms
- Using sharp objects — scissors or knives risk cutting into the latex surface
- Skipping the wash — activating the latex before first use makes a noticeable difference to grip performance
You're Ready to Go
With the film removed and the latex prepped, your gloves are ready for action. For best results, keep them slightly damp during play and store them in a cool, dry place after each session.
